Last night I attended the Perfect 36 Society reception, to thank the circle of donors who were among the first to give to the Tennessee Woman Suffrage Monument. I gave early this year and I am helping with their social media to raise awareness of the unveiling in October.
It was a lovely evening and one of those moments that reminds you why you do what you do, and support what you support. Only 8% of public statues in the U.S. depict women. So this monument is long overdue and very important. But it also honors the work of civic minded women who fought for that vote, and we were reminded of that last night.
President of the monument board Paula Casey, in her address to the crowd, asked all the women in the room who had either held public office, hold public office, or are running for public office, to stand up. Over half the room stood up. It was poignant reminder of how far we’ve come.
