The Intimate World of Mary Pickersgill

Few may remember the name of the woman who made a garrison flag that would go on to inspire America’s national anthem. Her name was Mary Pickersgill, and she was a business woman and flag maker in Baltimore. We also know her daughter and an indentured slave helped her.

How do you appreciate the work of such an undertaking? How do you begin to understand what life was like for her? Perhaps by slowing down, and looking at the objects and home she lived and worked in. The door-knocker she might have touched, a letter she might have received, or the floor in her bedroom where she slept…
